BIZTIPS: FREE Photo Editing Programs for the Small Business

Photo editing. Everyone does it - from personal reasons to business reasons. Maybe you just need to change the lighting in a picture you took of your son at the park, or maybe you need to add some promotional text to a great stock image you have of an item you are promoting. Regardless of your photo editing needs, I have some great program suggestions that are FREE and can help you save hundreds of dollars. A really great thing about free programs is the vast amount of tutorials online that will teach you how to use the programs free and on your own time.

There are a lot of great programs available, but I'm only going to talk about my personal two favorites in this article. The two do different things, so often I find myself using a combination of both programs when working on photos.

PAINT.NET

Let me clear up something really quick. The program is named Paint.Net, but it's actually located at http://www.getpaint.net/. 

It's free to download and completely safe (I've been using it for over 4 years) and CNET gives it a 5 star review. 

Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

Although there are some limitations to the software (you can't bend images or text for example), it is a really great photo editing software. If you have never used it or similar programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) then it might be a little intimidating at first. But give it time, read the tutorials and practice - you'll have it figured out in no time.


PICASA

Picasa is Google's photo editing program. One of my favorite features of Picasa is the collage option it has. It makes it quick and easy to create a product showcase on one image file that is clean, and together. It's great if you have a lot of images that need to be edited quickly. The editing options are simple, yet it has the important ones. You can change the lighting and contrast quickly. You can crop easily as well. The cropping tool works great if you need a certain size for your website, such as the shape of a square.

I love that Google updates it regularly as well and adds new effects and options, making it a better tool with each update.

Keep an Eye on UV Safety for Kids

      Although most parents and caregivers always remember to protect their children's skin from the harmful rays of the sun, a lot of them forget that their children's eyes need to be protected too. Did you know that nearly half of American parents do not regularly provide their children with sunglasses that protect their eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Unfortunately this exposure to the sun may set children up for possible vision problems when they are older. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that parents "Protect their [kids] eyes with hats and sunglasses. In addition, try to keep children out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest."

     If you are a parent of young kids like I am, you know this is not always as easy as it would sound.  A lot of kids do not like wearing sunglasses and it's almost impossible to make a child under 2 wear them. What I have found that works for me is, instead of buying the character sunglasses my children see and want merely because it has some cartoon character on it, I buy them sunglasses that look like what their dad wears. My sons are two and four and pretty much think their dad is the coolest guy around; so when they get to wear "grown up" sunglasses like their dad does, I notice they wear them much longer and are less likely to resist when asked to put them on.
